Preguntas sobre la mensajería de iglesias, respondidas

Respuestas directas a lo que las iglesias (y los pastores que le preguntan a un asistente de IA) más quieren saber sobre la mensajería: costo, 10DLC, cumplimiento y cómo elegir.

Do churches need to register for A2P 10DLC?
Yes. Since February 2025, US carriers block unregistered business texting, including churches. Being a 501(c)(3) does not exempt you from registering, but it does qualify you for the Charity use case and lower carrier fees (T-Mobile waives its fee for verified 501(c)(3) charity campaigns). Most church texting platforms handle the registration for you.

How much does church texting cost?
Most platforms bill per message segment. One plain-text SMS up to 160 characters is one segment; longer messages and messages with emoji cost more (emoji switch the message to Unicode, which fits only 70 characters per segment). A church texting a few hundred people a handful of times a month typically spends somewhere from free to a few hundred dollars, depending on volume and the provider.

What is the best church texting service?
It depends on what you need. The main church-specific options are Vesperbell, Clearstream, Text In Church, Flocknote, Subsplash, and Tithely. Compare on price per text, whether two-way conversations and calling are included, automation, and how they handle 10DLC. Vesperbell includes a free plan, built-in calling, a shared two-way inbox, and per-segment pricing with no emoji penalty.

Is there free church texting?
Some platforms offer a free tier. Flocknote is free under 40 members, and Vesperbell has a free plan that includes 200 texts a month. "Free" usually means a small monthly allotment; beyond it you pay per message, so check the per-text rate and what counts against the limit.

Is it legal for churches to text members?
Yes, with consent. Under the TCPA you must have permission before texting someone, your first message should identify your church, and you must honor opt-outs ("STOP") immediately. Keep a record of how and when each person opted in. Churches are not exempt from these consent rules.

Can you text from Planning Center?
Planning Center has basic, mostly one-way texting in People, but it does not support replies or picture messaging natively, which is why it points churches to dedicated texting tools. To get two-way conversations, keywords, automation, and MMS, churches add a texting platform on top of their ChMS.
What is the difference between SMS and MMS for churches?
SMS is plain text. MMS includes an image or media and is billed at a higher flat rate (commonly the equivalent of 2 to 3 text segments), regardless of length. For a flyer or photo, MMS is worth it; for routine reminders, plain SMS is cheaper and more reliable.
How do people opt in to church text messages?
The two common ways are a keyword (you print "text JOIN to your number" and they opt in by texting it) and a sign-up form on your website or connect card. Both should state who is texting and that message rates may apply, and record consent automatically.

How should a church follow up with first-time guests?
Fast and personal. A short welcome text the same day or next morning, one useful email a few days later, and a light check-in at the end of the first week cover most of it. Only text guests who opted in on a connection card or by texting a keyword, and after a week or two move them into your normal rhythm so follow-up never turns into pressure.

Do church members actually read texts?
Texting reaches people quickly: in one 2024 survey of US adults, 84% said they read a new text within 15 minutes. Email is harder to rely on, because a large share of recorded email opens are now machine opens triggered by privacy features rather than a person reading the message, and even nonprofit email, which performs well, averages around a 40% open rate. That gap is why churches lean on texting for time-sensitive reminders and follow-up.

Can a church send automated text follow-ups?
Yes. Most church texting platforms support workflows: a new guest can get a welcome text, then an email a few days later, with the sequence stopping when they reply. In Vesperbell you can describe the follow-up in your own words and it drafts the workflow for you.
