Estimate only. Segment counting follows carrier rules (GSM-7: 160 / 153 per segment; Unicode: 70 / 67). MMS and per-tool pricing vary; see the FAQ below.
How SMS pricing works
- What is an SMS segment?
- Carriers bill texts in segments. A plain-text (GSM-7) message fits 160 characters in one segment; longer messages are split into 153-character segments. Most texting tools, including Vesperbell, charge per segment, the same way carriers count them.
- Do emojis and special characters cost more?
- Yes. A single emoji or certain special characters switch the whole message to Unicode encoding, which only fits 70 characters per segment (67 when split). One emoji can double the cost of a message, so use them intentionally.
- How is MMS (picture messaging) priced?
- MMS, texts with an image, is billed at a flat higher rate than a single SMS segment (commonly the equivalent of 2-3 segments), regardless of length. This calculator estimates SMS; add a margin if you send a lot of images.
- Are incoming texts free?
- On most church texting platforms, replies you receive are free; you're only billed for outbound messages. Vesperbell works this way.
Texting that won't surprise you
Vesperbell bills per segment (no emoji penalty), starts free, and shows costs before you send. See pricing, browse free message templates, or compare church texting tools.
